Qbase Data Services has adopted what equates to a 'military level' operation when disposing of data. The company, which has developed and implemented this 'best practice' of dealing with old data files over the last 5 years, boasts a safe, secure and certified approach to the operation.

At a time when an ever brightening spotlight shines upon the issue of data security, data's 'end of life' cycle becomes increasingly important.
Three steps to security
Qbase implements a low-level format operation to dispose of old and unused data in three steps.
1 Firstly, the data held on a firewalled, password protected network is re-written twice using a coded format to ensure the data becomes unreadable. Although this is time consuming, it is the only way to ensure security is not compromised and that it can be transported safely.
2 The next step involves removing the hard drives from the computer equipment which are then put through a special industrial shredder and crushed rendering the data unusable and irrecoverable.
3 Finally, a certificate correlating to the recorded serial numbers of the hard discs is produced to qualify the secure process.

Ian Johnstone, Qbase Data Services Managing Director comments: "The removal and disposal of data from IT equipment is one of the biggest data security issues, just as storing it correctly is.

We have seen a few high profile incidents of data being found in places it shouldn't and landfill sites provides just the same risk. Protecting data at its end of life is just as important as during its use and the only trustable solution is to adopt practices such as these."

Protecting your data
Data security is about keeping data safe. Individuals as well as companies big and small rely heavily on their computer systems. If the data on these computer systems is damaged, lost or stolen, it could lead to disaster. Receiving and storing data remains just as high on the data security agenda. Internal security policies and handling data correctly are essential to gain client trust.
Transport your data securely
Qbase SFTA (Secure File Transfer Account) is a service which allows companies to send any volume of data, images, documents or other electronic material securely, since the SFTA automatically encrypts [256 bit] the transmission from desktop to servers, ensuring that data is protected during transmission.
